A huge thanks to the talented Kirra Cheers for inviting me along to photograph Alex & Justin’s fabulous backyard wedding in the Hamptons. It was a such a beautiful day in every way.
I’ve recently been doing some shoots for an amazing floral and event designer – Yena Jung of By Yena Designs. Not only is her work beautiful but it’s incredibly versatile – whether she’s designing an elegant outdoor wedding at the Foundry, a swanky affair at Capitale or a hip party at Tribeca 360, Yena is able to conjure up the perfect look for the day. I can’t wait to see and document more of her awesome work.
I’ve been looking forward to Kat & Jason’s wedding for a long time. Kat was one of my earliest fans and she contacted me almost a year ago to photograph her wedding in Dallas. When she emailed me, she said something along the lines of “we found a great venue and I think you’re going to love it. It’s perfect for your style of photography.” And she was completely right. The Trinity River Audubon Center is a photographer’s dream location – spectacular light, a gorgeous natural setting, unique architecture, great lines and patterns. Combine that with Kat, Jason and their wonderful family and friends, and this wedding was absolutely amazing to photograph.
“So what’s Erik Clausen’s name doing in the title of this post?” you ask. Well, if everything I noted above wasn’t enough to make photographing this wedding awesome, I got to shoot it with Erik Clausen. I’ve admired Erik’s work for quite a while – his mastery of light and his incredible photojournalistic skills and creativity make him one of my favorite wedding photographers. Every year, I like to take some time to hone my craft, and for 2013 I decided to find myself a mentor with strong technical and artistic skills. Erik was an obvious choice for me so I reached out to him to see if he’d be interested in setting up a one-on-one mentor session.
The stars were aligned for us and not only did he shoot Kat & Jason’s wedding with me since it happened to be in his hometown, he also flew up to New York two weeks later so that we could do a deep dive into the photographs and so that I could pepper him with a very long list of questions. I was amazed at Erik’s complete openness and his ability to truly understand and tackle the heart of my questions. It was the perfect learning experience and far better than any mentor session, workshop or conference I could have imagined. So thanks so much to Erik! Some of the photographs below are his.
