My middle sister had this quote taped to her desk when we were growing up – “To dare to be different is to dare to be you, and to dare to be you is to live life to its fullest.” Looking back at Melanie and Aaron’s wedding, I can’t help but be reminded of this quote.
Wedding blogs often provide inspiration to brides and grooms looking to create a unique look to their wedding through details and decorations, but what I loved about Melanie and Aaron’s wedding was that they decided to make their wedding itself unique. The morning was full of culture and tradition reflecting the groom’s Jewish background. Surrounded by close family and friends, the couple were married at an intimate ceremony at the Picnic House in Prospect Park, a beautiful venue just up the street from their brownstone apartment.
Then, after a short break in the afternoon, the party resumed in full swing at the Bell House in Gowanus, a concert space also a short walk from the couples’ home. The groom is an incredible musician and the couples’ circle of friends is also bursting with musical talent. So instead of a standard wedding reception, the couple hosted a live concert – yeah, this wedding rocked (bad pun, sorry guys). The bride and groom skipped a first dance and instead the groom played the piano for the father-daughter dance. And later, after a couple hours of amazing live music, the evening concluded with a spontaneous, improvised piano duel between the groom and one of his friends. I have some pretty fantastic clients.
Here are links to the awesome musicians who played at Melanie & Aaron’s wedding: Aaron Kotler (the groom), Nadje Noordhuis, Michael Cabe, Kyle Saulnier, Michael MacAllister, Mark Lau, James Shipp, Amali Premawardhana, Ernesto Cervini, Mark Micklethwaite, Alice, Benjamin Scheuer, Goeff Kraly, The Awakening Orchestra, and Tim Whalen of Phat Phunktion. And thanks to my excellent second shooter Falcon Griffith – some of the detail and ceremony shots are hers.
